High School Sophomores and Junior aspiring collegiate athletes, it's time to get a move on the recruiting process!
Michael Clarke, writing for Active.com, sums up the process into 8 steps:
1. Make sure the classes you're taking meet the NCAA core course requirements! Talk to your guidance counselors and consult the NCAA compliance website
2. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly the NCAA Clearinghouse). This is not a hard process, but don't forget to do it!
3. Make your lists of schools! It is generally recommended to make three lists: reach, realistic, and safety schools. Talk to your guidance counselors and coaches to discuss your academic and athletic fits and which division you would like your future school to be in.
4. Create a video of 10-15 highlight plays. While swimmers and runners can send in concrete times that speak for themselves, athletes who play a "game" sport cannot simply send in their stats. A (lacrosse) coach's judgement of a players' ability comes from seeing them play and talking to coaches.
5. Research the schools on your lists. Talk to current and formers players if you can to try to obtain a deeper insight into the program.
6. Contact the coaches. Write a short email (a few paragraphs) and send your highlight video. If a coach prefers a phone call, make sure the athlete calls the coach, not the parent!
7. Get in front of the university coaches! Attend the camps of each respective team, if possible, and try to get some face-time with the coaches.
8. The decision! Be sure to visit the schools you are accepted to and meet the team and get a feel for the campus atmosphere. Take all the information you gathered from your research on the schools academic and athletics department, the finances, and the general atmosphere. Also, be sure to look at how the school places their graduates into the corporate world, and more specifically how well athletes from your team are placed.
